Dieses Programm präsentiert zwei aktuelle Werke aus Nigeria, das mit seiner florierenden Filmindustrie längst zu einem globalen Player geworden ist. Nollywood steht für eigenständige Geschichten, starke Charaktere und eine beeindruckende erzählerische Dynamik. Diese beiden Filme geben einen Einblick in die kreative Vielfalt und gesellschaftlichen Themen, die das nigerianische Kino prägen.

Anhand der Figuren – vom Künstler über den Sammler bis zum Museum – werden die wechselnden Wahrnehmungen von Kunst und deren Bedeutung für Identität und Erinnerung beleuchtet.
Inspired by real events surrounding the short film tells the story of the stolen Benin Bronzes from the 1897 expedition and explores the ongoing restitution debate. Through its characters – from the artist to the collector to the museum – it examines shifting perceptions of art and its significance for identity and memory.

Der Film erzählt die Liebesgeschichten von drei nigerianischen LGBTQ+-Paaren und wie sie romantische Beziehungen in einem konservativen und feindseligen nigerianischen Umfeld meistern. Begleitet werden ein lesbisches Paar, ein schwules Paar und ein Paar, das aus einem Transmann und einer Cis-Frau besteht. Der Film behandelt Themen wie Akzeptanz, Religion, Gesundheit, das Gesetz zum Verbot der gleichgeschlechtlichen Ehe (Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act, SSMPA) und die Suche nach Liebe. Zwei der drei Paare trugen bei den Dreharbeiten Masken und ließen ihre Stimmen verzerren. Die Maske und die verzerrten Stimmen dienten nicht nur dazu, die Identität der Darsteller zu verschleiern, sondern sind auch ein Symbol für das Doppelleben, das LGBTQ+-Nigerianer zu ihrer eigenen Sicherheit führen müssen.
The film tells the romance stories of 3 Nigerian LGBTQ+ couples and how they navigate romantic relationships in a conservative and hostile Nigerian environment. The cast includes a lesbian couple, a gay couple and a couple made up of a transman and a ciswoman. It covered conversations around acceptance, religion, health, the Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act (SSMPA), and finding love. 2 of the 3 couples wore masks and had their voices distorted. Aside from helping to conceal the identity of the cast, the mask and distorted voices are also symbolic of the double life LGBTQ+ Nigerians have to live for their safety and security.
